The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand’s most famous one day hike and is regularly ranked among the world’s best one-day walks. This unforgettable 19.4 km trek takes you through dramatic volcanic landscapes, emerald lakes, ancient lava flows, and alpine scenery in the heart of Tongariro National Park.

Tongariro Springs Boutique B&B is the perfect base for your adventure. Located in a peaceful rural setting near National Park Village (Waimarino), we’re ideally positioned for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Mt Ruapehu, and the region’s many walking and cycling trails.

Transport and Parking

Planning your transport before hike day is essential.

Parking Restrictions

The Mangatepōpō Road car park has a 4-hour parking limit, so you cannot leave your vehicle there for the full hike.

Shuttle Services

Because the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a one-way walk, most visitors use a shuttle service. Several local operators provide reliable door-to-door transport and can collect you directly from Tongariro Springs Boutique B&B.

A Sacred Landscape

Tongariro National Park is New Zealand’s oldest national park and holds UNESCO Dual World Heritage status for both its outstanding natural features and its cultural significance.

The mountains, waterways, and alpine lakes are sacred (tapu) to local iwi, including Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro. Visitors are asked to respect this special place by not entering or swimming in the lakes or waterways.

More than 30 generations ago, the ancestor Ngātoroirangi named these mountains and established a lasting connection between Māori and this landscape. In 1887, Chief Te Heuheu Tūkino IV gifted the central peaks to the people of New Zealand, helping create Tongariro National Park in 1894.
